Late 1950’s Columbia Newsboy Special

This late 1950’s Newsboy Special, built by the Columbia Manufacturing Company is a heavy-duty balloon tire bicycle that was designed to fill the demand for a rugged service bicycle. By the time this bike was produced, the middleweight craze was in full swing, and very few balloon tires were being marketed. This one is a survivor, with it’s original paint still looking pretty darn good for it’s age. The original seat has been replaced with a generic aftermarket piece, and the addition of a chrome luggage rack and wheel reflectors are not original. The original kickstand has also been replaced by a generic rear-axle mounted unit. The wide and tall handlebars were designed to accommodate newspaper bags, or clearance for large items that might be carried in a front basket, should the rider decide to add one. Notice that the spokes are of a heavier gauge than standard.
